If you are looking to bring a smile to someone’s face, nothing beats a playful, hand-colored animal scene! Today, I’m excited to walk you through how I created this adorable slimline lion card—featuring four playful lion cubs exploring a savanna landscape.
Whether you are making a birthday card, a pick-me-up note, or just practicing your alcohol marker blending, this card design offers a fantastic opportunity to experiment with pattern repetition, scene building, and warm color palettes.
Start by planning your layout on a slimline white card panel. To create a full, lively background, stamp your lion figures across different areas of the panel. Intersperse grass tufts and rock clusters between them to fill in negative space and build a cohesive savanna scene.
Using your Ohuhu alcohol markers, colour the lions starting with your lightest yellow-orange shade across the body. Layer deeper orange and warm caramel tones along the undersides, tail curves, and backs to build depth and dimension. Leave soft highlights on their backs to give them a glowing look.
Color the grass tufts using a combination of bright and olive greens to create natural contrast. For the rocks, soft warm grays with subtle stippling add realistic texture without overwhelming the cute lion illustrations.
Stamp the sentiment "WISHING YOU A ROARING GOOD DAY!" onto a strip of crisp white cardstock and frame it with a thin black border. Mount the main colored panel onto a solid black card base to give the design a sharp, polished pop.
